Modifying Component Variable Data

Component variables are those whose data is entered as two or more separate values, which taken together, make up the main composite variableClosedComposite variables represent the result of multiple component variables for Check Each, Ranking, Date, Time, or Time Span type responses. They contain the full date or time data for dates, times, and time spans. For Check Each, the composite represents the total number of Check Each responses selected. For Ranking, the composite represents how many items were ranked.. These include Data Elements with the following response types:

  • Date: Month, day, year
  • Time of Day: Hours, minutes, seconds
  • Time-span: Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years
  • Check Each: Two or more individual check items
  • Ranking: Ranking of two or more categories

These will always appear at the end of the variable listing in the Warehouse Manager following all other type variables. They are not listed with their corresponding composite variable. This is also true of any QDS data that is exported from the Warehouse Manager to SPSS, SAS, Stata, MS Access or ASCII text file. It is not possible to change the order of this listing.

If you need to modify a component variable, you cannot modify the main composite variableClosedComposite variables represent the result of multiple component variables for Check Each, Ranking, Date, Time, or Time Span type responses. They contain the full date or time data for dates, times, and time spans. For Check Each, the composite represents the total number of Check Each responses selected. For Ranking, the composite represents how many items were ranked. but will need to change the value of the components. Select each component part that needs updating and follow the same modify procedures as for regular variables. After you have completed changes to one or more component parts, the composite variable value will be updated.

For example, if you had a date variable for Date of Birth called DOB, you would have the components DOBY, DOBM, and DOBD for the year, month, and day.component variableClosedA component variable is one part of a composite variable. Check Each, ranking, date, time, and time span response types all have composite and component variables. A Check Each component represents whether or not a response was selected. A ranking component represents the rank selected. A date, time, or time span component represents that part of the whole date or time, such as year, month, weeks, hour or minute.

Date of Birth components

If you needed to correct the data for year, you would change the value on DOBY; then the value for DOB will be updated accordingly.
